With passkey login, you can sign in to your account without a traditional password. Instead of typing a password, you simply confirm the login using Face ID, your fingerprint, Windows Hello, or your device PIN.
A passkey is a cryptographic key that is securely stored on your device or in your account (e.g. in iCloud Keychain, Google Password Manager, or your Microsoft account).
1. What is a passkey?
A passkey is a modern replacement for passwords:
-
You no longer need to remember a password.
-
Login is done using:
-
Face ID / Touch ID
-
Fingerprint sensor
-
Windows Hello
-
Device PIN
-
-
The actual “secret key” stays securely on your device.
-
On the login page, you use your passkey – everything else happens in the background.
👉 Important: Your email address is still required, for example to link your account, send notifications, and as a fallback (password login, password reset, etc.).
2. How to set up passwordless login / passkey
Passkey setup is done from within your existing account. It is not currently set up during registration.
Prerequisite: First, sign in as usual using your email address and password.
Then follow these steps:
-
Go to your “Account” area.
-
Open “Login and security”.
-
Click on “Passwordless login / Passkey”.
-
Select “Add passwordless login”.
-
Follow the instructions in the dialog window shown by your browser or operating system.
In this dialog, you will typically be asked to:
-
select a device or account (e.g. “Use this device to sign in”)
-
confirm the setup with Face ID, fingerprint, or device PIN
Once completed, the passkey is linked to your account.
Future logins can then be completed without a password.
3. Signing in with a passkey
After you’ve set up passwordless login / a passkey, the sign-in process works like this:
-
Open the login page as usual.
-
In the login input field, you’ll see a fingerprint icon.
-
Click this fingerprint icon.
-
Your device will now use the stored passkey. You’ll be asked to confirm the login using your chosen method, for example:
-
Fingerprint
-
Face ID
-
Device PIN
-
Once you confirm, you’ll be signed in to your account – no password required.
👉 Note: Depending on your account configuration, you can usually still sign in using your email address and password, for example if you don’t have a passkey-enabled device with you.
4. Which devices support passkey login?
To use passkeys, you’ll need:
-
A modern browser, e.g.:
-
Chrome
-
Edge
-
Safari
-
-
A supported device, e.g.:
-
Smartphone with iOS or Android
-
Laptop / PC with Windows or macOS
-
In addition:
-
A screen lock (Face ID, fingerprint, PIN) should be enabled.
-
You should be signed in to your cloud account, e.g.:
-
Apple ID
-
Google account
-
Microsoft account
-
This allows many systems to synchronize your passkeys across devices, for example from your smartphone to your laptop.
👉 Tip: If you don’t see the passwordless login / passkey option, please update your browser or use a more recent device.
5. Sicherheit & Datenschutz – kurz erklärt
No plain-text password
-
We do not store any password in plain text.
-
Instead, a cryptographic key is stored securely on your device or in your Apple, Google, or Microsoft account.
Protection against phishing
-
A passkey works only with our genuine domain.
-
A fake login page on another website cannot use your passkey – this makes phishing attacks much harder.
Tied to your device
-
The passkey is tied to your device or to the underlying account (Apple ID, Google, or Microsoft account).
-
Only this device or account can use the passkey.
What if I lose my device?
-
In most cases, you can manage your passkeys via your Apple, Google, or Microsoft account.
-
Additionally, as long as we offer it, the classic login with email and password remains available as a fallback.
-
On a new device, you can simply set up a new passkey for your account.
